We are working very hard to pass a LGBT non-discrimination policy in my town. We’ve been filling our city council chambers with numbers they’ve never seen before. We get up and talk, tell our reasons why LGBT discrimination exists even though the right-wing, fundamentalist Christians don’t think it does. But they don’t care anyway because, and this was said in front of the council, as Sodom and Gomorra felt the wrath of god, so will our town! A city councilman who stated in the paper he’d vote yes, but voted no at the last minute sending the measure to defeat. 100 supporters crammed in a room that holds 75, people down the hallway outside, a Republican state representative AND the democrat he beat for the seat BOTH spoke in favor. When confronted by an audience member with his quote of how he would support it, he responded that he had been saved 10 yrs ago (guess he forgot when he endorsed 5 days earlier) and that marriage is between a man and a woman. Don’t forget- this is a non-discrimination measure that outlaws discrimination of people in employment, housing, and public accommodations based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Who the hell said marriage?? The councilman also said , in his official seat at the council, Christians, go read your bible! Oh dear Tumblr, this is an elected official, in his official capacity, voting against civil rights based on his read of the bible.
Every opponent started with a variation of this: I am a christian, but… (or however). I have nothing against gay people but…
So I’ve been extra specially angry at hypocrites who use christianity as a shield for their homophobia. I must add that the local Episcopalian church was there as a group IN SUPPORT, and their Reverend spoke as well. She said that she believed, as a Christian, that God would smile down on our town if we passed this measure. But she was no match for the old men with their big bibles opened at the mic.
But fear not. You KNOW we have not given up! We have been pushing and fighting and meeting with city officials for 2 weeks now to get it back for a vote and get it passed. I’ve had meeting with people like never before. A couple a day, sometimes. With a Republican who was aware of how badly I slammed him on my fb the during his election (awkward!!) The local press came out in support before the first vote which surprised and thrilled us! Since then, they’ve written about what we are doing plus editorials, 4 out of 5 days of the week for 2 weeks! I started a letter writing campaign and they have been flooded with letters at their homes. The newspaper wrote, twice, that they have been overwhelmed with letters in support but NOT ONE letter in opposition. They invited opponents to write, but NOBODY DID.
So as I sit here, dear Tumblr, we are on the edge of our seats to see if the council will put it back on the agenda for next week. One main opponent has changed his mind to yes so it would pass if he doesn’t change it back like the other guy did. But will it be put on the agenda for a vote? Will he stick to his support, will others come out to support in in spite of their religious objections and fear it will have naked gay people running through the streets getting married? I sure hope I have good news soon. In the meantime, I am reposting this essay on the very people who stood against civil rights and won. THIS TIME.
