I'm A PFLAG Mom

TDOR from me

As a human being, I’m appalled at the murder of innocents. Appalled at the murder of people for their gender expression. Appalled at the murder of people for their sexual orientation- religion-race-ethnicity-social status- as I said: innocents.

But TDOR is especially hard for me because one of the people I love the most in this whole world, a man who means more to me than words could ever express, my son- is a transgender man. To think he could be a target because this one small fact about him chills me to the core. I fear for him everyday but put that aside telling myself that nobody would ever want to hurt such a beautiful soul as my son. But then the harsh reality sets in and I know that there are monsters out there who only see his trans* status and NOT his beautiful soul. That is hard for a mother to accept. So today, take a moment to think about what we can do as a society to end this violence. Think of one small way you can help stamp out transphobia. Don’t be silent. Don’t turn away from it. Do something.

And heartfelt sympathy for all those who have lost their lives, and to their loved ones, memorialized on this TDOR 2011.
